Al Jazeera –full review
Fullbrook’s book reminds us that there’s a rational order in the world – that countries can learn from one another’s experience in tackling social problems and challenges, and that by striving to match what already works elsewhere, they can make their own countries better.

This is a familiar refrain. But has anybody asked about the students’ knowledge of the humanities. That is important not only for the retention of civilized livng but for avoiding the sort of mistakes in foreign policy that the Bush Administration made in Iraq and Afganistan.

I have a PhD in molecular biology, and several peer reviewed papers that are not outstanding, but are ok, in decent journals, and some highly cited review papers.

My kids go to high school in Newton MA
I can tell you that the quality of the honors science is OUTSTANDING; at least as good – and maybe better – then my college courses

My question: if you compare the top 10% of American kids, who will, realistically, be 90% of the scientists, how do they compare to the relevant percentile abroad, taking into account the various factors that make country to country comparisions difficult ?

I would also say, that in my personal experience, in both my personal life, and what I read of in the news, that mis communication between people is one of, if not the main source of sorrow and pain in the world, and that psychology courses are more important then science, on the grounds that if the understanding afforded by psychology allevieates even 1% of the suffering we all see around us, it is vastly more important then science.
