Are we heading towards a recycle-economy? We can at least do better: in countries like Belgium and Denmark the recycle percentage is about 80%.

The net result here is an approximate 20% reduction in materials not recycled. Does plastic incinerated to create energy count as recycled in Europe? I have the impression this is the case in the US.

Another question: recycling waste counts as ‘production’ in the national accounts. Rightly so – labor and capital and land are used to do this. But should ‘not treating waste’ in fact be subtracted?
