What is it about human beings — human nature — that allows some of us to enter a mental or psychological state that some amongst us would indiscriminately gun down innocent people losing our own life in the process? The capacity of the human mind to create beliefs and reify theories is truly astonishing? Most of us do it and when our passion is hooked up to those beliefs along with our persistence in the face of obstacles, we are capable of the most wonderful accomplishments and the most terrible of actions without regard to our personal safety. Some amongst us question these beliefs and think at another level. I must read the Selfish Gene because clearly this has had survival value in our evolution. ISIS believes in the final Armageddon as do other groups. Their mission is to bring that about.

Umberto Eco (1984[1980]) in The Name of the Rose has William tell his young apprentice
: ‘Fear prophets, Asdo, and those prepared to die fpr the truth, for as a rule they make many others die with them, often before them, at times instead of them’ (p. 491 of the Picador edition). William was referring to religious disputes within Christianity of the XIV century. The novel was written while many terrorist attacks took place in Italy in the name of extreme left and right wing dissidents. Now different ideologies are operating and hitting us all, if not physically, emotionally and socially.
