I’ve seen this same kind of session in other “professional” associations. It’s said these sessions help bring the discipline’s members “down to earth.” Unfortunately from my experience it often has just the opposite effect. By reinforcing the prejudice in the room that economists (or whatever discipline) must be okay since they can “laugh at themselves.” Laughter turns to a confirmation of who and what they are rather than a call to evaluate what they believe and what they do.
