The question is whether the hourly rates stayed the same in the various countries, even corrected for inflation? In other words, did rising hours account for greater take-home pay, or are Americans, lucky to have survived layoffs, doing more work for stagnant wages? As well, does the lower average number of hours in Europe represent fewer people working, more joblessness, or something else? Finally, is there a prevailing theory for the contrasts?
What good are those stats? They tell us nothing about the real value (true worth) of a job or the actual quality of life (QOL) factors of any community anywhere. It would be far more useful to track the stats for the nations with the highest QOL and GDH (general domestic happiness) factors compared with various other nations of interest. After all, the averages show nothing of the insanity and unsustainability of the vast majority of jobs doomed by increasing AI-enhanced automation and destructive sociocultural decline and sociopolitical degeneracy. Right?
The necessary hours devoted to the global production in relation with the population, are decreasing. The source of Marxian value is decreasing provided that the necessary hours for workers living are not decreasing more rapidly. But there is a limit given by the total workers employed (which indeed work a lot of hours!)
I am afraid these stats seem rather vague to me. But what has been clear for a very long time is that the whole world is in chaos and disarray and increasing abject poverty is affecting too many people, even those who used to be classified as “the working poor” renamed from the “working class” to “middle class” or “working people”. Let us hope for a formula that will be able to calculate how many fewer hours populist dictators might live to enable the starving to find enoguh leftover food and medicine in garbage bags to survive and look forward to building a brighter future.
