Acid rain, health and government policy

A recent meme of the fact free right in my country (the Netherlands) is the idea that the Acid Rain problem spontaneously disappeared. It didn’t. It was the government, stupids! And it is a really serious problem which did and does require attention. Source

It’s important to note that these results support the conclusion that regulation is an effective environmental and economic tool to improve life for humans as well as the welfare of the Earth. They also demonstrate that public-private cooperative approaches to economic and environmental welfare are both effective and economically viable. The U.S. Acid Rain Program (ARP) is, as noted in the report a cap-and-trade program to control sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions implemented beginning in 1995. Seems like in 1995 many politicians, policy makers, scientists, and think tankers still had some common sense left. And fascists (the Nazi and evangelical varieties) had not yet attained control of the nation. Sort of gives me a sense of nostalgia.
